After adding another snowmaking pump, we have also added to our source water by drilling another well. To keep our snowmaking plant in balance, we need to fill the reservoir and cooling ponds as fast as we pump it out. What does this all mean? More snow, more efficiently, and in less time!
Snowmaking Improvements for 2019 – 2020:
FROM CABERFAE PEAKS – September 4, 2019 – Our “What’s New Wednesday” series is back! We are busy getting ready for the upcoming ski season and we will highlight some of the off season improvements over the next few months on Wednesdays.
The crew is currently installing a new 12” snowmaking pipeline coming out of the pumphouse. The new 12” pipe replaces 1000 feet of old 8” pipe. The larger pipe will result in more water flow, better pressure, and less friction loss, which translates into more snow, made faster & more efficiently.
Gotta keep feeding those snow guns!

More snowmaking improvements with a new 6″ trunk line up Smiling Irishmen.
Snowmaking expansion at the top of North Peak, with the addition of larger snowmaking pipe. The 6″ diameter pipe will allow for less friction loss and higher water pressure, which translates into increased snow production at the top of our ski hill.
Our focus on snow quality continues with the acquisition of a Prinoth BR 350 snow grooming vehicle. The groomer will process the snow much more efficiently and layout that beautiful corduroy that our skiers and riders have grown to know and love.

My skills at the hula hoop have always been nil. I would watch in envy as friends, obviously more flexible than me, orbited the hoop around their midriff for what seemed like hours. Looking back, my hooping moves likened more those of the “Elaine Dance” (of Seinfield fame) than Annette Funicello — or Frankie Avalon for that matter.
The hula hoop has recently resurfaced in my life, however, this time as a far more useful tool: a skiing aid for my three-year-old. How so, you ask? We simply utilize it as a way to keep our son, who yet possesses the physical ability to form his “pizza wedge” fully and hence, effectively control his own speed, within our reach by placing it over his head. He holds onto it in the front while we ski behind him, holding onto the other end. Voila. He’s the ‘king of the world’ as we cruise down the hill, while mom and dad have peace of mind.
There are two other advantages to using this high-tech tool. (1) It also acts as a barrier, I feel — a force field of sort — around my son, protecting him from others speeding by, and (2) when you need to tow the little one (up a hill or along a flat), you can simply flip it over his or her head and pull your budding skier along.
Now, I must give credit where credit is due: I got this idea from the ski instructors at Crystal Mountain in Michigan who have been at this ‘teaching kids to ski thing’ far longer than me. Bravo.

A 20-year veteran of the Michigan ski business, O’Neill has taught and toted kids of all ages about various Michigan ski areas and resorts and provides a weekly Michigan ski report to several radio stations across the state on the Michigan Talk Network’s Michigan Morning Show. A big proponent of getting out and having fun in Michigan, no matter what the season, O’Neill herself started skiing with her family at the age of five, and has had her oldest son on skis since 19 months. Son number two, just over a year, will soon be on his way, she says.

Last fall we checked out Boyne Mountains SkyBridge. It’s the world’s longest timber tower suspension bridge at 1,200 feet. I was hoping to be there during peak fall colors but we were a little early, still pretty views though.
Now my husband (the tallest guy I know) has a fear of heights or he says it’s more of a fear of falling. It was October 11th and it was a very sunny day and the wind was really whipping. He had no problem with the chair lifts but aside from stopping to take a quick photo on the bridge he couldn’t get off it quick enough, especially at the glass bottom part! All and all he did great and it was a beautiful day ☀️ 🍂 🍁

We landed early on a Friday and hit the road north with my sister behind the wheel 🚗💕 First stop: Uncle John’s Cider Mill in St. Johns for cider + donuts (a must). Then off to East Lansing for the MSU Homecoming Parade 💚🤍
Saturday morning we made our way to the cutest town of Harbor Springs, then cruised M-119 through the Tunnel of Trees — pure postcard perfection. 🌲
Our weekend base was Boyne Mountain, where we rode the ski lift up to SkyBridge — breathtaking fall colors in every direction. Sunday took us to Charlevoix + Traverse City for shopping and dinner at Poppycocks (10/10, recommend). The drive back? Let’s just say… a deer made it memorable. 🫣
Next morning, we crossed the Mackinac Bridge, climbed Castle Rock, waved to Paul Bunyan like old friends, and wrapped up through East Lansing + Ann Arbor before heading home to Tampa on a Monday. 😅
A perfect Midwest mix of family time, fall color chasing, and cozy vibes — made even better sharing it with my sisters, my friend, and our littles getting their first real taste of fall. 🍃🧡
