City Pivots After Hickory Hills Operator Drops Out

Plans to hire an outside operator to run Hickory Hills Ski Area this winter have hit a major bump. The City of Traverse City was unable to reach terms with North Country Alpine Services (NCAS) because of insurance and liability issues. With the operator dropping out, the city is taking back over and...ABR Trails Foundation is thrilled to welcome our new operations team Josh Sherven and Tracy Truesdell. Their combined experience in hospitality along with their passion for the ABR mission and love of the UP make them a great fit.
Josh and Tracy, originally from the Pacific Northwest, fell in love with the Upper Peninsula and moved to Ironwood from Idaho in the spring of 2020. They moved to Roanoke, Virginia in 2023 so Tracy could pursue her goal of being a working artist and Josh could pursue his passion for cycling. Both of them were interested in being part of the farm to table food scene.
Josh, a Boise State cross country athlete with a Bachelors in Mathematics, has a storied career of travel and adventure that has led to over twenty years in the hospitality and related industries. These adventures have included, groundskeeping at golf courses, packing bush planes for climbers of Denali in Alaska, owning and operating a beach bar in Baja Mexico, owning, co-operating, or managing restaurants with his wife, Tracy, and teaching high school math. After running, he became passionate about cycling and worked as a bike mechanic. His love of fitness led him to ABR where he learned and loves to ski.
Tracy, whose formal training was in fine arts, has had a thirty plus year career as a restaurant professional. She has opened, owned, managed, co-wrote the business plan for, and consulted for other restaurants. The intersection of community, food systems and service has been her focus throughout. She hopes also to integrate her passion for art making and pottery inspired by the beauty of the trails with her tenure at ABR.
Both Josh and Tracy are honored to be part of the team that carries forward the awesome legacy and exciting future of the extraordinary and beautiful trails of ABR.

If everything goes well today, we’ll be looking for some volunteers this weekend to help us splice the rope. 💪🎿

Work continues on the Green Mountain terrain expansion with the installation of 10" snowmaking pipe to feed water to future snowmaking machines.

Our crew has been hard at work getting everything ready for another incredible winter season. Here’s what we’ve been up to:
🎨 Repainting chairlift chairs
🌿 Mowing and clearing the mountain
🔧 Lift line maintenance and inspections
💡 Preparing to install the remaining lights for expanded night skiing
And the biggest project yet… the new rope installation on the Odin Chair is expected to begin within the next couple of months! We’re excited to keep improving the mountain and can’t wait to welcome everyone back this winter.
