Ski Michigan – Skiing and Snowboarding in Michigan

Porcupine Mountains State Park Cross Country Ski Trails – Silver City, MI

Four main and several smaller trails combine to form the 42 KM Nordic Trail System at the Porcupine Mountains State Park.

The cross country ski trails encircle the lift-served Alpine Ski Area with numerous scenic loops. Trails are track set with a power-tiller equipped groomer.

Warming huts are located along the Log Camp Loop and Union Spring Trails. Daily and season trail passes are available at the chalet and include a one-ride lift ticket to the summit.

Winter interpretive activities include guided snowshoe hike and lantern light skiing. Check at the chalet for scheduling.

Lantern Light Cross-Country Skiing: (Selected Saturdays During the Season) Old-fashioned kerosene lanterns illuminate the trail during this night ski. Lanterns are placed along the entire one-mile loop for a remarkable night skiing experience. Stop about halfway around the loop at the warming shelter where the park naturalist will have a blazing fire going. This trail has an “easy” difficulty rating; however, skiing at night is always a challenge.

This program may be canceled due to weather. To inquire about cancellations call (906) 885-5206.

All programs are free; however, all motor vehicles entering a Michigan state park or recreation area must display a valid Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance.

Porcupine Mountains Yurts

Would you like a true winter wilderness experience? Try spending a winter night or two (or more) in the Porcupine Mountains in a yurt. Yurts are sturdy, tent-like structures, that originated in central Asia. The park’s three yurts will provide visitors with a snug, weather-tight shelter that is close to the park’s hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails.

Each of the 16-foot-diameter yurts are available year-round, will sleep four people and are equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, wood stove, axe, bow saw and cooking and eating utensils. Running water and electricity are not provided, but an outhouse is nearby and wood is provided for heat in the colder months.

The park’s yurts are accessed only by trail. The distance and degree of challenge required to reach them will vary with the season. The rental fee is $60 per night and there is an $8 reservation fee.

For reservations call 1-800-447-2757 or online at www.midnrreservations.com.

For additional information, contact Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park at (906) 885-5275, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information on Yurt Lodging in the Porkies click here.

Mackinac Island Cross Country Skiing

Mackinac Island Cross Country Trails

The Mackinac Island Ski club grooms trails on the east and north side of the Island in Mackinac Island State Park.

The cross country ski trails wind through the pristine woods of Mackinac Island State Park and allow the winter visitor to see all of the natural and historical landmarks of the island.

You can follow the ski trails to the interior of the island and take in the vistas from the highest point on the island at Fort Holmes. Or ski through the woods to Arch Rock and enjoy the view of Lake Huron from the bluffs on the eastern side of the island.

How a Tiny Island Became Michigan's Number One Tourist Attraction

mackinacisle was America's second national park — three years after Yellowstone. Today it's known for fudge, horses, and being the only place in America where cars have been banned for over 125 years.

The Anishinaabe called it Michilimackinac — "The Great Turtle." They believed it rose from the back of a giant turtle after the Great Flood and was home to the Great Spirit. Archaeological evidence shows they gathered here for over 2,000 years.

French fur traders arrived in the 1600s. The British built Fort Mackinac in 1780. Two battles of the War of 1812 were fought here. But when the fighting stopped, tourism began.

In 1887, two things happened that shaped the island forever: The Grand Hotel opened with its 660-foot porch (still the world's longest), and the Murdick family started making fudge on marble slabs. Today, 10,000 pounds are handcrafted daily during peak season.

Then came 1898. When horseless carriages spooked horses and wrecked carriages, the village council banned automobiles. That ban still holds. Over 500 horses roam the island. Zero cars. Just 500 year-round residents — but over 1.2 million visitors arrive by ferry each summer to bike the shoreline, tour by carriage, and explore 82 percent of the island preserved as Michigan's oldest state park.

The 1980 film "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed here. The Lilac Festival has run since 1949. The Grand Hotel has hosted six U.S. Presidents. The entire island is a National Historic Landmark.

Mackinac chose slowness when the world chose speed. And it never looked back.

Old Mackinac Point Light is a beautiful lighthouse sitting right below the Mackinac Bridge. This was one of my planned shoots for my trip to the U.P. Last fall and it did not disappoint. I planned to do a sunset shoot here so I arrived about an hour before sunset to get ready and find my spots. Within minutes of parking this gnarly looking cloud rolled in over top of me and I was scrambling to get off some shots. I climbed in the bed of my truck and started shooting. I was trying to get a 3 for 1 with this shot and am very pleased how this one turned out with the dark clouds above, a view of the bridge and the lighthouse showing off the moodiness of the moment. Hope you enjoy this image that my buddy danthompson_tn helped me finalize. #michigan #upperpeninsula #lowerpeninsula #mackinac #oldmackinacpointlighthouse

Loving the Anne vibes so much!💙😊🌸

"Anne’s return to the island after her father’s death threw her into a whirlwind of emotions she wasn’t ready for. She’s so genuine—talkative, struggling with her teaching job, and trying to make sense of everything that’s falling apart inside her. That honesty grabbed me from the start.
Her fiancé looks solid on the surface—the dependable type—but I could tell Anne was longing for something deeper. Their relationship isn’t full of loud drama, but there’s this quiet tension that feels heavy in the spaces between them.

Then there’s the man who’s been connected to Anne’s life for years in a way that she can’t brush aside anymore. He’s not just someone new; his presence stirs things up beneath the surface, adding complexity and a kind of steady weight that made the story richer.

The references to Anne Gable’s books scattered through the story were a nice surprise. I hadn’t read her before, but those moments made me curious to explore her work.

Anne’s summer wasn’t simple or smooth—it was tangled with grief, complicated feelings, and uncertainty about the future. The story doesn’t pretend life is straightforward, and that made every moment feel real and honest. I found myself caught up in Anne’s world, feeling every twist and turn alongside her."

60,000 followers 🤯 I'm not sure what I thought was going to happen when we started sharing what everyday life looks like on Mackinac, but if you asked me 3 weeks ago if it would look like 60,000 followers I probably would have laughed. I'm having the best time showing you guys what it's like to live in the most magical place on the planet! I thought I'd show you where our store is since you'll all be coming to work with me this summer, and then I got the best surprise when I looked over and saw the otters splashing around in the harbor! They are tough little buggers to have a pool party in -7. Whenever you can start your day watching the otters you know it's going to be a good one 💕 #otter #mackinacisland #winter #snowmobile #michigan

❄️ Throwback Thursday ❄️
Before ferries, before docks, before Main Street as we know it… Mackinac moved across the ice.

246 years ago, as winter locked the Straits in ice, Ste. Anne’s Church was dismantled log by log and hauled across the frozen water. From Revolutionary War winters to present day, Ste. Anne’s Church remains a living thread in Mackinac’s story.

🚨While ice crossings are an important part of Mackinac’s history, it currently is not safe to cross. Always follow guidance from local public safety officials and stay safe.🚨
