Ski Michigan

⛷️ Did you know? Hans “Peppi” Teichner helped shape nearly every major ski hill in the Grand Traverse region.

Recruited to northern Michigan in the 1940s, Peppi recognized the potential of Sugar Loaf and helped bring national attention to its development as its manager. He later played key roles in creating Ci-Bo Ski Hill replaced by Hickory Hills, and Holiday Hills (now Mt. Holiday)—all with a focus on making skiing safe, accessible, and affordable for local youth. His efforts also led to the recognition of skiing by the Michigan High School Athletic Association in 1953.

Today, Peppi is remembered as the father of northern Michigan skiing and was inducted into the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame in 1967. 🎿❄️ Tell us where you’ve seen his legacy honored!

Learn more about Peppi and Sugar Loaf history by visiting the Leelanau Historical Society museum.

Exhibit will remain up until the end of 2026.

FROM Hanson Hills >> ❄️ WEDNESDAY NORDIC UPDATE — JANUARY 28, 2026 ❄️
🎿 Nordic Trail Update:
🏡 Lodge and trails open at 9:00 AM
We received about 2 inches of new snow yesterday—a nice refresh for the trail system.
Groomer Dan is getting a well-earned day of rest today. Justin will be heading out on the groomer after this morning’s GRA Board meeting, which means grooming efforts will begin around 9:30 AM.
➡️ Red Trail will be the first pass once grooming starts.
🧣 Cold Weather Reminder:
An Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect. Please be sure to layer appropriately—think windproof outer layers, warm gloves or mittens, face protection. We strongly encourage taking frequent warm-up breaks and listening to your body while out on the trails.
Thanks for your patience this morning and for looking out for yourselves in the cold. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support—see you out there! #hansonhills #crosscountry #snowphotos #SkiMichigan❄️ WEDNESDAY NORDIC UPDATE — JANUARY 28, 2026 ❄️
