Did you know Stonecliffe was once home to the only island ski resort in the world? In the early 1970s, “Mt. Humbard” featured ski jumps, chair lifts, a toboggan run, and even trails with names like the “Hallelujah Trail.” Despite its ambitious vision, the resort only operated for two winters before closing, earning the nickname “Humbard’s Folly.”

The Leelanau Conservancy announced Thursday that it is acquiring 285 acres of the long-dormant Sugar Loaf Resort property, with plans to reopen the land as a four-season public recreation area. The site will be home to new hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails – including a trail to Sugar Loaf’s summit – as well as family-friendly amenities like a sledding hill, a seasonal ice rink, and a native plant garden. #sugarloaf #whatsnew #SkiMichigan
