Mackinac Island Cross Country Skiing
The Mackinac Island Ski club grooms trails on the east and north side of the Island in Mackinac Island State Park.
The cross country ski trails wind through the pristine woods of Mackinac Island State Park and allow the winter visitor to see all of the natural and historical landmarks of the island.
You can follow the ski trails to the interior of the island and take in the vistas from the highest point on the island at Fort Holmes. Or ski through the woods to Arch Rock and enjoy the view of Lake Huron from the bluffs on the eastern side of the island.

OPENING ACT is finally here! This evening, we'll gather in the Tea Garden at the Grand Hotel to celebrate the beginning of the 2026 Summer Season of Arts & Culture on Mackinac Island. We can't wait to welcome friends, supporters, artists, and community members for an unforgettable evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, live jazz, and celebration.
We're also excited to raffle several beautiful original works of art generously donated by Bill Murcko, Monica Pipia, Kristen Hosbein, Maeve Croghan, and Natalia Wohletz. Raffle tickets will be available throughout the evening for $25 each or 5 for $100, with proceeds benefiting the Mackinac Arts Council.

If you go back and look at my May 16th post, you’ll see a picture of this postcard in front of the Mackinac Island post office.
Each of our exchange students fell in love with Mackinac Island during their time here and enjoyed spending a weekend on the island. What wasn’t shared at the time is that four of these postcards were mailed to the four exchange students we have hosted over the last four years.
I’ll share each postcard’s journey and where it ended up. Some posts will include pictures of the exchange student, and some may not, it’s up to each of them.
The first postcard to arrive was received by Lea from Wiesbaden, Germany!
Lea’s visit to Mackinac Island was especially memorable because her American sister was proposed to in the Secret Garden at the grandhotelmichigan. Even more special, katharinerose.photography captured both the proposal and our family photos that day.
Lea later returned the following year to be a bridesmaid in the wedding and enjoyed another summer trip to Mackinac Island.
Mackinac Island holds a special place in our hearts, and it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of our exchange students as well.

Round Island Lighthouse sits in the Straits of Mackinac, which connects Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. Built in 1895, the island that this lighthouse sits on is not publicly accessible, but it does serve as a landmark for all of the fairies that travel from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island. ⛴️ Visiting Mackinac Island was one of my long time bucket list items!! I'm so glad I got to visit and see this lighthouse on the way! 🐴🪻

A little compilation of my week! The last two mornings I've had cookies in the oven before 5 AM and since this weekend is the last weekend of Lilac Festival here on the island, I imagine tomorrow will be the same. The sunrise was UNREAL this morning and it even came with a rainbow! The days are long but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. A massive "thank-you" to our team who are absolute rockstars and have gone above and beyond every week, but this week especially. Arch Rock is one of the most iconic natural wonders of Mackinac Island, rising dramatically 146 feet above the shimmering waters of Lake Huron. Carved from limestone during the post-glacial Nipissing period, this rare natural arch has stood the test of time, silently witnessing centuries of history unfold along the shoreline.
For Native American communities, Arch Rock was more than a geological formation. It was a sacred place imbued with spiritual power, inspiring generations of stories and legends. When European travelers arrived, they marveled at its unusual shape. Among them was Alexis de Tocqueville, who described it in 1831 as the "Giant's Arch" of extraordinary form.
Its remarkable presence played a key role in the creation of Mackinac National Park in 1875, later becoming part of Mackinac Island State Park. Today, Arch Rock remains one of the island's most treasured landmarks, drawing visitors along scenic roads and trails to stand beneath a formation shaped by ice, time, and legend.
