Mackinac Island Cross Country Skiing
The Mackinac Island Ski club grooms trails on the east and north side of the Island in Mackinac Island State Park.
The cross country ski trails wind through the pristine woods of Mackinac Island State Park and allow the winter visitor to see all of the natural and historical landmarks of the island.
You can follow the ski trails to the interior of the island and take in the vistas from the highest point on the island at Fort Holmes. Or ski through the woods to Arch Rock and enjoy the view of Lake Huron from the bluffs on the eastern side of the island.

The name "Mackinac" or "Michilimackinac" comes from the Anishinaabe tribes, especially the Odawa and Ojibwe, who considered the island sacred. From an aerial view, they believed it resembled a Great Turtle—with the hill as its shell and surrounding parts as limbs. Today, Mackinac Island in Michigan feels like a place where time stands still. Once a military hotspot for the French and British, it now bans cars since 1898—allowing only cycles and horse carriages. Preserved like a living museum, it showcases Victorian-era charm, clean air, and sustainable tourism—proving development and nature can coexist peacefully.

Spent a chilly day off inside the grandhotelmichigan, viewing the dorothydraperco redecorated spaces and rooms during their preview event! Our favorite was definitely the Teddy Roosevelt suite, but I also loved the eerie empty hallways and quiet before the busy season.

You don’t realize how much background noise and dirt cars add to our surroundings until you experience somewhere without them. Plan on renting a bike, taking a horse drawn carriage, or just walk! Come for the day on the sheplersferry (like we did) or plan a whole vacation! Stop and see thegrandhotel, restaurants, Bed and Breakfasts, Fort Mackinac, bike trails... there’s so much to do and see.

If you've been to Mackinac Island, hopefully you've been to Watercolor Cafe. It's the cutest cafe and art space next to the marina, and it overlooks the water, the perfect spot to enjoy lunch. One of our favorite things to get there are their Poppies, delicious handmade pastries like in the image above. Although you can't eat the ones you see here because they're made of clay, I highly recommend trying one from Watercolor if you have the chance.
